The Associated Press Stylebook, a secular Bible for America?s editors,? is taking a new, careful approach toward the term ?Islamist? and Holy Quran.
The AP, earlier this week, barred use of the phrase ?illegal immigrant? and required the a person?s status in the United States be spelled out in news stories.
Now, it has responded to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who complained that the term ?Islamist?, as previously defined, was being used to stereotype Muslims as radicals and jihadist (holy war) advocates. The previous definition of Islamist was:? ?A supporter of government in accord with the laws of Islam (and) who view the Quran as a political model.?
The new Stylebook definition of Islamist:? ?An advocate or supporter of a political movement that favors reordering government and society in accordance with laws prescribed by Islam.?? It adds:
?Do not use as a synonym for Islamic fighters, militants, extremists, or radicals who may or may not be Islamists.? Where possible, be specific and use the name of militant affiliations, al-Qaida-linked, Hezbollah, Taliban, etc.? Those who view the Quran as a political podel encompass a wide range of Muslims, from mainstream politicians to militants, known as jihadi.?
The Council on American-Islamic Relations said in a statement:
?We believe this revision is a step in the right direction and will result in fewer negative generalizations in coverage of issues related to Islam and Muslims.?
