This is going to be a quick post because a) I don't want to use my blog as a shameless self-promotion destination, and b) I just typed in this whole blog post, got up from my desk for a moment without saving, and returned to find that the server had timed out and I lost everything I wrote. Good times.
Mostly this is just an announcement of my speaking engagements from now through the end of October. If you're going to be in Cincinnati, D.C., Dayton, Indianapolis, or New York on one of those days, it would be great to meet you.
Saturday, September 22 (which is tomorrow, and my talk isn't finished yet, but who's worried?): I'm doing a morning workshop at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pleasant Ridge. Pleasant Ridge, if you don't live here in Cincinnati, is the cool neighborhood that has the Pleasant Ridge Chili diner, where they have the gravy fries I adore so much. Unfortunately, we are not getting together to eat gravy fries but to talk about spiritual practices, specifically Sabbath-keeping and simplicity. The event is from 9-12 and it's free, and there is a luncheon at the end. Gravy fries not included.
Sunday, September 23 (which is the day after tomorrow, and my talk isn't finished yet, but who's worried?): If you're leading a Saturday workshop about keeping the Sabbath, the best thing you can do is turn around the very next day and violate the Sabbath by doing another speaking engagement. Such constant failure at Sabbath-keeping breeds humility. So from 3 to 4:30 on Sunday I will be giving a "Mormonism 101" presentation at First Presbyterian Church in Fairborn, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. There will be a quiz with prizes for the best and worst scores. Reception and booksigning to follow.
Wednesday, September 26, 11 p.m.: I'm one of the talking heads in a Channel 9 (?) local news feature on Mormonism in Cincinnati. We filmed it last night here at the house.
Friday, September 28: I'll be one of five speakers at IUPUI's "Mormonism in the 21st Century" conference in Indianapolis. I'm speaking on Mormonism and popular culture, which -- let's be honest here -- is an assignment that allows me to watch Sister Wives and call it work. The other speakers are Jan Shipps, Kathleen Flake, Phil Barlow, and former U.S. Sen. Robert Bennett.
Saturday, October 6: I'll be part of a panel discussion on Mormonism and the Media at the Religion Newswriters Association conference in Washington, D.C. Terryl Givens and Darius Gray are also participating, and Joanna Brooks and David Campell are speaking on Thursday. Old home week!
Saturday, October 13: I'm the kickoff speaker for the BONCOM conference in New York City. This event, sponsored by Bonneville Communications, is for LDS media and marketing professionals and will take place at Cooper Union.
Wednesday, October 24: I'm speaking about writing and publishing at an event here in Cincinnati, but I don't know the details yet.
Sunday, October 28: In the morning, I'm speaking at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Hyde Park, Cincinnati, about "digital detox" and my spiritual practice of unplugging from email and social media from Saturday night to Monday morning each week. That evening, I'll be reprising the "Mormonism 101" talk at Ascension Lutheran Church in northern Cincinnati.
After the election, my schedule eases up considerably. And that's a good thing, because between all this speaking and the cool new job I started this month, I've fallen way behind on important stuff, like watching Dr. Who.
