Little time left to head off longshoremen's strike

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shipments of products as varied as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels could sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense, if more than 14,000 longshoremen go on strike as threatened ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.

Commerce could be brought to a near standstill at major ports from Boston to Houston if the strike takes place on Sunday, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.

"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."

The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.

In addition to transporting goods, U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.

"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.

Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.

The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.

Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."

"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."

The White House has weighed in on the issue, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.

If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.

The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.

An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.

Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.

Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.

Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.

Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.

Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.

The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.

Putin signs anti-U.S. adoptions bill

MOSCOW (AP) ? President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed a bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children, making the legislation official less than 24 hours after his office received it from Parliament.

The bill has angered Americans and Russians who argue it victimizes children to make a political point, cutting off a route out of frequently dismal orphanages for thousands of children. The Russian-language hashtag "PutinEatsKids" was trending on Twitter just minutes after Putin signed it.

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children not in parental custody in Russia while about 18,000 Russians are on the waiting list to adopt a child.

The law also blocks dozens of Russian children now in the process of being adopted by American families from leaving the country. The U.S. is the biggest destination for adopted Russian children ? more than 60,000 of them have been taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

The measure is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russian officials deemed human rights violators. The U.S. State Department has said it regrets Parliament's decision to pass the bill, arguing it would prevent many children from growing up in families.

Children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov says that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the U.S. would remain in Russia if the bill comes into effect.

Putin has said that U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished.

The passage of the bill followed weeks of a hysterical media campaign on Kremlin-controlled television that lambasts American adoptive parents and adoption agencies that allegedly bribe their way into getting Russian children.

A few lawmakers claimed that some Russian children were adopted by Americans only to be used for organ transplants and become sex toys or cannon fodder for the U.S. Army. A spokesman with Russia's dominant Orthodox Church said that the children adopted by foreigners and raised outside the church will not "enter God's kingdom."

Can Teresa Giudice Turn Things Around? Here's How!

At the end of the most recent season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, the cast was divided into two very uneven teams: Caroline Manzo, Jacqueline Laurita, Melissa Gorga and Kathy Wakile versus Teresa Giudice. Teresa, the Italian cookbook author and mother of four little girls, was the obvious villain of season 4. She was accused of spreading malicious gossip about her family, selling out her friends to the tabloid press, and covering up her husband Joe Giudice's bankruptcy, possible illegal activities and probable infidelity. By the time the three-part reunion show rolled around, Teresa looked anything but "fabulicious."

?boob squeezing? helps prevent breast cancer? - BlackMediaSCOOP

(BlackMediaScoop) Oh lawwd just what everyone teenage boy and MAN have been dreaming about? According to a new study, squeezing breasts can prevent cancer.

More specifically, the, research from UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that mechanical force can stop the rapid growth of cancer cells as well as guide them back to a normal, healthy growth pattern.

There were no boobs squeezed in the study. It was a cell culture experiment, not an experiment on boobs or on people with breast cancer. While a study that involves boob squeezing probably sounds fun to our male readers freaks :) , that?s not what this study was about.

The headlines all took the ?boob squeezing is good,? angle, though the researchers specifically stateS: ?Compression, in and of itself, is not likely to be a therapy.?

The reports say ?prevent breast cancer? when the study shows nothing of the sort ? it shows that under cell culture conditions, application of manual forces can change the breast cancer cells.

Actual breast cancer is much much more complicated than cells growing in a dish.

A Dad: the tenth most popular gift requested by children at ...

Dina sent me this sad article from the UK Telegraph.

Excerpt:

A study of 2,000 British parents found most children will put a new baby brother or sister at the top of their Christmas list, closely followed by a request for a real-life reindeer.

A ?pet horse? was the third most popular choice, with a ?car? making a bizarre entry at number four.

Despite their material requests, the tenth most popular Christmas wish on the list was a ?Dad?.

[...]A request for a ?mum? reached number 23 on the list.

It?s sad. I think that there is a perception among many young women today that it is OK to have recreational premarital sex that may lead to having a child out of wedlock. Many unmarried women have an intuition (not supported by data) that a child will turn out fine without a father in the home. Some think (against the data) that fathers can be substituted with a government welfare check and that children won?t notice the difference. But the research shows that this is a false belief.

Excerpt:

Census data and the Fragile Families survey show that marriage can be extremely effective in reducing child poverty. But the positive effects of married fathers are not limited to income alone. Children raised by married parents have substantially better life outcomes compared to similar children raised in single-parent homes.

When compared to children in intact married homes, children raised by single parents are more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems; be physically abused; smoke, drink, and use drugs; be aggressive; engage in violent, delinquent, and criminal behavior; have poor school performance; be expelled from school; and drop out of high school.[19]?Many of these negative outcomes are associated with the higher poverty rates of single mothers. In many cases, however, the improvements in child well-being that are associated with marriage persist even after adjusting for differences in family income. This indicates that the father brings more to his home than just a paycheck.

The effect of married fathers on child outcomes can be quite pronounced. For example, examination of families with the same race and same parental education shows that, when compared to intact married families, children from single-parent homes are:

  • More than twice as likely to be arrested for a juvenile crime;[20]
  • Twice as likely to be treated for emotional and behavioral problems;[21]
  • Roughly twice as likely to be suspended or expelled from school;[22]?and
  • A third more likely to drop out before completing high school.[23]

The effects of being raised in a single-parent home continue into adulthood. Comparing families of the same race and similar incomes, children from broken and single-parent homes are three times more likely to end up in jail by the time they reach age 30 than are children raised in intact married families.[24]?Compared to girls raised in similar married families, girls from single-parent homes are more than twice as likely to have a child without being married, thereby repeating the negative cycle for another generation.[25]

Finally, the decline of marriage generates poverty in future generations. Children living in single-parent homes are 50 percent more likely to experience poverty as adults when compared to children from intact married homes. This intergenerational poverty effect persists even after adjusting for the original differences in family income and poverty during childhood.[26]

And here?s a bit more data?showing that having government replace fathers via higher taxes and more redistribution of wealth doesn?t take away the bad effects of fatherlessness:

Children from low-income, two-parent families outperform students from high-income, single-parent homes. Almost twice as many high achievers come from two-parent homes as one-parent homes. Source: ?One-Parent Families and Their Children;? Charles F. Kettering Foundation (1990).

Children reared by a divorced or never-married mother are less cooperative and score lower on tests of intelligence than children reared in intact families. Statistical analysis of the behavior and intelligence of these children revealed ?significant detrimental effects? of living in a female-headed household. Growing up in a female-headed household remained a statistical predictor of behavior problems even after adjusting for differences in family income. Source: Greg L. Duncan, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn and Pamela Kato Klebanov, ?Economic Deprivation and Early Childhood Development,? Child Development 65 (1994).

After taking into account race, socioeconomic status, sex, age, and ability, high school students from single-parent households were 1.7 times more likely to drop out than were their corresponding counterparts living with both biological parents. Source: McNeal, Ralph B. Jr.?Extracurricular Activities and High School Dropouts.? Sociology of Education 68(1995): 62-81.

I think that these are significant in light of the recent shooting in Connecticut:

In studies involving over 25,000 children using nationally representative data sets, children who lived with only one parent had lower grade point averages, lower college aspirations, poor attendance records, and higher drop out rates than students who lived with both parents. A 1988 Department of Health and Human Services study found that at every income level except the very highest (over $50,000 a year), children living with never-married mothers were more likely than their counterparts in two-parent families to have been expelled or suspended from school, to display emotional problems, and to engage in antisocial behavior. The shooter in Connecticut hadn?t spoken to his father in two years:

Peter Lanza, the father of Sandy Hook shooter, hadn?t spoken to his son for more than two years and his father is at a loss for what drove Adam to kill 20 students and six teachers at his old elementary school.

[...]Adam, 20, had not spoken to his brother Ryan or father for upwards of two years at the time of the shooting. Adam reportedly distanced himself from his father Peter when he started to become serious with his new girlfriend, and current wife.

Peter and Adam?s mother Nancy split in 2001 but did not formally divorce until November 2008. Court records made the split appear amicable as both parties agreed to put their sons needs above any bitterness, but Adam was apparently the one to cut ties with his father in 2010.

Women need to think ahead and realize that the little children will be impacted by her choice of man, as well of her choice of whether to have recreational premarital sex with a man. If she doesn?t test him adequately and makes poor choices, then the children will be deprived of a father in the home. I don?t think that the sentiment ?he makes me happy and horny and my friends approve of him? necessarily translates into ?he can do the job of protecting, providing and leading on moral and spiritual issues?. Those are two different sets of criteria, and often at cross-purposes in a culture that despises traditional male roles as ?sexist?.

Transfusions add risk in some heart attacks, finds study of patients with anemia

Dec. 24, 2012 ? When heart attack patients present in the emergency department with some degree of anemia, or anemic patients have a heart attack, physicians have a tendency, but not much guidance, about whether to provide a blood transfusion. The idea is that a transfusion could help more oxygen get to the heart. Recent national guidelines suggested that there simply isn't good evidence to encourage or discourage the common practice, but a new meta-analysis of 10 studies involving more than 203,000 such patients comes down on the side of it increasing the risk of death.

The next step for determining when the practice could be appropriate needs rigorous randomized trials that will generate more decisive, high-quality data, said lead author Dr. Saurav Chatterjee, a cardiology fellow at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Providence VA Medical Center.

For the analysis published Dec. 24 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Chatterjee and his co-authors combined and analyzed data from studies in which anemia patients with heart attacks either received "liberal" transfusions or received more restricted versions of the treatment or no transfusions at all. Liberal transfusions were defined as cases in which patients either received two units of blood or more or had a transfusion even with a hematocrit reading (a measure of red blood cell concentration) higher than 30 percent (normal is in the low 40s).

What the researchers found, after statistical adjustments to control for important medical factors, was that the risk of death was 12 percent higher for people who received the liberal transfusions than those who did not. Moreover, the group that received liberal transfusions had twice the odds of having another heart attack.

"What we found is that the possibility of real harm exists with transfusion," Chatterjee said. "It is practiced in emergency departments all across the United States. I think it is high time that we need to answer the question definitively with a randomized trial."

Of the 10 papers that Chatterjee and his co-authors reviewed, all but one were observational studies. The only randomized trial was a small pilot experiment.

Searching for an answer

Chatterjee began the study when he was a resident at Maimonides Medical Center in New York. He noticed a paper by the AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks) in which the association said there was not enough clinical evidence for or against transfusions in heart attack patients.

For clinicians, the practice has always been a tough judgment call. Some transfusions are clearly necessary, for example when a patient's troubles include not just a heart attack but also severe ongoing bleeding, Chatterjee said. But transfusions also create health risks, such as an increase in potential clotting because platelets may clump together more, or from an inflammatory immune response to the introduction of blood of a "foreign" source into the body.

Chatterjee and his co-authors decided to comb the literature to determine whether, if properly combined and analyzed, existing data could provide some insight. They found 729 potentially relevant studies, but only 10 that had the right data to help answer the question.

Few as they were, Chatterjee said, the studies all told much the same story.

"One of the things that struck us is that there were very few studies in evidence of transfusion at all," Chatterjee said. "In our case, though, we found that the effect was pretty consistently harmful across the spectrum of studies, spectrum of time, and spectrum of patients that were enrolled in the individual studies."

Chatterjee said the study should not be taken to mean that transfusions should be stopped altogether for anemic heart attack patients. Instead, he said, doctors must continue exercising their clinical judgment, at least until results from a large, well-designed randomized trial can be produced. Mindful of the risk his study found, however, they might just want to shift their thinking about where the border is among borderline cases.

"Before a definitive trial is out there, we should be conservative, especially considering the high risk of harm," he said.

In addition to Chatterjee, the paper's other authors are Jorn Wetterslev of the Centre for Clinical Intervention Research in Copenhagen, Denmark; Abhishek Sharma and Edgar Lichstein of Maimonedes Medical Center; and Debabrata Mukherjee of Texas Tech University.

Israel revisits ban on female prayer at holy site

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister has instructed a quasi-governmental Jewish organization to find a solution for non-Orthodox Jewish female groups wishing to pray at one of Judaism's holiest sites.

An official said Tuesday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Natan Sharansky, chairman of the Jewish Agency, to look into the matter. The official spoke anonymously according to government regulations.

Last week Israeli police detained women from a liberal Jewish group who approached the Western Wall in Jerusalem carrying prayer shawls. Orthodox Jews insist those are for men only. The women seek to worship at the site without such restrictions.

Jewish Agency spokesman Benjamin Rutland said Netanyahu told Sharansky that the Western Wall "must remain a source of Jewish unity rather than division." The wall is a remnant of the biblical Jewish Temple compound.

Heavy Snow Blankets Southern Illinois

FIRST PERSON | WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- In a year of severe weather, including a drought that left the local area devastated, a winter storm has so far dumped six inches of snow with more still falling here in southern Illinois.

As of 8 a.m. local time, there was still a blizzard watch for the area until noon with snow in the forecast until at least 4 p.m. Authorities are advising everyone except for emergency workers to stay off of the roads until the storm passes.

The snow began falling locally a little after 10 p.m., though the winds, gusting up to 35mph, had begun in the early evening. The heaviest snow began to fall at 2 a.m. Visibility was so poor that venturing away from the house would leave you in a swirling haze of snow with winds inhibiting your ability to find your way back.

While visibility has improved considerably, the blowing snow alone makes for hazardous driving conditions. I live on a normally busy street and there are no signs anyone has attempted to venture out thus far.

There are currently no reports of power outages or downed limbs. The best course of action at this point is to stay inside and allow nature to take its course and then allow clean-up workers to do their jobs.

Local message boards have been speculating that the local area is in for a winter with far more snow than usual. The National Weather Service has projected that the winter will be colder than normal and that the area should be out of the drought before the farmers start spring planting. This doesn't bode well in an area that is 29 inches low on precipitation due to the drought but only averages eight inches of snow each winter!

U.S. moves to sell advanced spy drones to South Korea

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration formally proposed a controversial sale of advanced spy drones to help South Korea bear more of its defense from any attack by the heavily armed North.

Seoul has requested a possible $1.2 billion sale of four Northrop Grumman Corp RQ-4 "Global Hawk" remotely piloted aircraft with enhanced surveillance capabilities, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement dated on Monday and distributed on Tuesday.

South Korea needs such systems to assume top responsibility for intelligence-gathering from the U.S.-led Combined Forces Command as scheduled in 2015, the security agency said in releasing a notice to U.S. lawmakers.

"The proposed sale of the RQ-4 will maintain adequate intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities and will ensure the alliance is able to monitor and deter regional threats in 2015 and beyond," the notice said.

The United States has agreed with Seoul to turn over the wartime command of Korean troops later this decade. Current arrangements grew from the U.S. role in the 1950-1953 Korean War that repelled a North Korean takeover of the South.

Seoul has shown interest in the high-altitude, long-endurance Global Hawk platform for at least four years. The system, akin to Lockheed Martin Corp's U-2 spy plane, may be optimized to scan large areas for stationary and moving targets by day or night and despite cloud cover.

It transmits imagery and other data from 60,000 feet at near real-time speed, using electro-optical, infrared and radar-imaging sensors built by Raytheon Co.

The possible sale has been held up by discussions involving price, aircraft configuration and a go-slow on release of such technology subject to a voluntary 34-nation arms control pact.

The Defense Department began informally consulting Congress on the possible Global Hawk sale in the summer of 2011, only to withdraw it pending further work on the make-up of the proposed export to Seoul amid lawmakers' arms-control concerns.

The formal notification to Congress came less than two weeks after a North Korean space launch of a satellite atop a multi-stage rocket, a first for the reclusive state, widely seen as advancing its ballistic missile program.

A White House statement denounced the December 12 launch as a "highly provocative act" that would bear consequences for violations of United Nations resolutions. The North is banned from testing missile or nuclear technology under international sanctions imposed after its 2006 and 2009 nuclear weapons tests.

In October 2008, then-U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters that the United States was "very sympathetic" to South Korea's interest in Global Hawk. But he cited issues that had to be overcome because of the so-called Missile Technology Control Regime, or MTCR.

The pact, established in 1987, has been credited with slowing the spread of ballistic missiles and other unmanned delivery systems that potentially could be used for chemical, biological and nuclear attacks.

Pact members, including the United States, agree to curb their exports of systems capable of carrying a 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) payload at least 300 kilometers (186 miles). The Global Hawk falls under a strong presumption against export under MTCR guidelines.

The notification to Congress did not mention that a U.S. government waiver for such an export would be required.

Arms-control advocates fear that this could fuel instability and stir regional arms-race dynamics as well as provide diplomatic cover for an expansion of such exports by Russia, China and others.

The Obama administration agreed earlier this year to let South Korea, a treaty ally, stretch the range of its ballistic missile systems to cover all of North Korea, going beyond the voluntary pact's 300 km (186 miles).

The congressional notification is required by U.S. law and does not mean that a deal has been concluded.

If a sale takes place, it would be for the third generation of Global Hawk drones known as Block 30, the security agency's notice to Congress said.

The Pentagon, in its fiscal 2013 budget request, proposed mothballing its own Block 30 Global Hawks and ending plans to buy more of that generation. Doing so would have no effect on the administration's plans to acquire other versions of the long-range drone.

South Korea's possible Global Hawk purchase would mark the system's first sale in the Asia-Pacific region. It has already been sold to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Australia, Japan and Singapore each have shown interest in buying Global Hawk systems, Northrop Grumman officials have said. Company representatives had no comment on the Christmas holiday on the proposed sale to Seoul.

Iraqi premier in Jordan, no oil deal announced

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) -- Iraq's prime minister has made a rare state visit to Jordan for talks, as Jordan faces an energy-related budget crisis.

A brief royal palace statement said Monday's meeting of King Abdullah II with Nouri al-Maliki covered Syria and Palestinian issues.

Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul-Karim Elaib took part, but there was no word about boosting Iraqi shipments of 15,000 barrels of oil a day to resource-poor Jordan.

Violent demonstrations erupted in Jordan last month after the government removed subsidies to offset $5 billion in losses from a rising fuel bill. Heating and cooking gas prices jumped by 54 percent, and some oil derivatives rose by up to 28 percent.

Last month Iraq's Shiite-led government announced a one-time gift of 100,000 barrels of oil to Sunni Muslim Jordan to help.

21 min.

Workers probably won't feel the full brunt of next year's tax increases in their January paychecks, but don't be fooled by the temporary reprieve.?

No matter what Congress does to address the year-end fiscal cliff, it's already too late for employers to accurately withhold income taxes from January paychecks, unless all the current tax rates remain unchanged, which is an unlikely scenario.?

Social Security payroll taxes are set to increase on Jan. 1, so workers should immediately feel the squeeze of a 2 percent cut in their take-home pay. But as talks drag on over how to address other year-end tax increases, the Internal Revenue Service has delayed releasing income tax withholding tables for 2013.?

As a result, employers are planning to withhold income taxes at the 2012 rates, at least for the first one or two paychecks of the year, said Michael O'Toole of the American Payroll Association.?

If employers don't withhold enough taxes in January, they will have to withhold even more taxes later in the year to make up the difference. Otherwise, taxpayers could get hit with big tax bills, and possibly penalties, when they file their 2013 returns.?

The tax increases could be steep. If Congress fails to act, workers at every income level face significant tax increases next year as part of the year-end "fiscal cliff."?

A taxpayer making between $50,000 and $75,000 would get an average tax increase of $2,400, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $92 a paycheck, on average.?

Someone making between $75,000 and $100,000 would get a tax increase averaging nearly $3,700. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $142 a paycheck.?

O'Toole said it would take most employers two weeks to four weeks to update their payroll systems, once new tax withholding tables are released. For some small businesses, it could take longer.?

"Employers can't really just come up with withholding tables on their own, depending on what the rates are," O'Toole said. "The smaller companies that do not use a payroll processing service probably would have more problems than anyone else."?

On Friday, the IRS said it plans to issue guidance by the end the year, though it won't be early enough to affect paychecks in early January.?

"We are aware that employers have questions with respect to 2013 withholding," the agency said in a written statement. "Since Congress is still considering changes to the tax law, we continue to closely monitor the situation. We intend to issue guidance by the end of the year on appropriate withholding for 2013."?

About three-quarters of taxpayers got tax refunds this year, averaging $2,707, according to the IRS. That gives most taxpayers some leeway to manage their income tax withholding. However, many people rely on tax refunds to pay bills or make major purchases.?

"The reality is, the vast majority of Americans do live paycheck to paycheck and that tax refund is their most significant payday of the year," said Bob Meighan, vice president of TurboTax, an online tax preparation service.?

Most of the expiring tax breaks were first enacted under President George W. Bush and extended under President Barack Obama. Obama campaigned for re-election on extending the tax cuts on incomes below $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for married couples. Obama would let the tax cuts expire on incomes above those amounts.?

Boehner's offer
In negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner, Obama offered to raise the income threshold, limiting tax increases to those making more than $400,000. Boehner, who has argued for years that the tax cuts should be made permanent for everyone, responded by trying to push a bill through the House that would have let many of the tax cuts expire on incomes above $1 million.?

Many Republicans revolted and Boehner, R-Ohio, shelved the bill, sending lawmakers home for the Christmas holiday and leaving the outcome of talks in doubt as the new year approaches.?

If Congress and the White House cannot reach a deal, income tax rates would go up, estate taxes and investment taxes would increase and the alternative minimum tax would hit millions of middle-income people. A temporary payroll tax cut that has benefited nearly every wage earner in 2011 and 2012 expires, costing the average family an additional $1,000 a year by itself.?

In addition, dozens of other tax breaks for businesses and individuals that are routinely renewed each year already expired at the end of 2011. Congress was expected to renew many of them by January, so taxpayers could still claim them on their 2012 tax returns.?

If Congress doesn't act on those tax cuts, businesses would lose a popular tax credit for research and development as well as generous tax breaks for investing in new plants and equipment. Individuals would lose federal tax breaks for paying local sales taxes, buying energy efficient appliances and using mass transit.?

In all, taxes would go up by about $536 billion next year.?

Should The Denim Smartphone Pocket Become Standard On Jeans ...

Advertise here with BSA

There?s no doubt the smartphone has changed the world, and maybe even more than once. As soon as it hit our hands, it was a huge success. No longer were we limited by the already incorporated features that came with the shipped phone. We could now download applications that further expanded the features on our smartphone. Suddenly the features available were only limited to the hardware that supported them, which in theory, is only limited to our imagination. But what now? We have the smartphone, but now we don?t know where to put it. It?s either too big or too fragile. Well, there are some people in the world who want to make the denim smartphone pocket a standard on all jeans. Is it a good idea?

The smartphone pocket idea comes from a company called I/O Denim, and it is a pretty straight forward idea really. How many times have you struggled when trying to get your smartphone out of your jeans pocket? I would say a bunch of times, right? The I/O Denim solution is to put a smartphone pocket on the left-hand side of the jean?s seam. Within an arm?s reach, you?ll have a much simpler and straight forward way to get access to your smartphone.

Not much needs to be said about this concept other than that it?s a great one. The smartphone pocket idea is another thing that is currently in its startup phase. Just like almost all other startups, the I/O Denim project is raising funds on Kickstarter in order to secure their first shipment. They are looking to raise $10,000 to fund their project, and with only 7 days left and just $5,800 raised, it?s now up to us whether or not this will become a part of our future. Do you feel you are in need of a smartphone pocket? Would it make your life simpler? Heck yeah! My humble opinion is that if it can keep us from having unnecessary accidents and allow us easy access to our smartphones, it?s a solution worth trying. What is your opinion?

Disney Wins Control of 'Winnie the Pooh' Trademarks In Federal ...

A 21-year legal battle ended last week, as a federal court ruling protected Disney?s trademark of the characters of?Winnie the Pooh. The U.S. Federal Court of Appeals upheld a decision set by?U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which blocked challenges to Disney?s trademark by Stephen Slesinger Inc.

Stephen Slesinger, a New York literary agent and pioneer in cartoon character marketing, was the first to see the potential in A.A. Milne?s original?Winnie the Pooh characters, and Milne transferred the characters? merchandise rights to Slesinger in 1930. Following Slesinger?s death, his widow then assigned the rights to Disney in 1961.

The Slesinger?s agreement with Disney was renegotiated in 1983 in order to settle certain contract disagreements. By that point, Disney had turned?Winnie the Pooh into a major global franchise; Pooh had become one of the most well-known and profitable Disney characters, and the company was able to build a multi-million dollar merchandising empire around the beloved characters. Soon after the contract renegotiation, the family became embittered with Disney and believed the company to be grossly underpaying the family in royalties for the various Pooh products.

In 1991, the Slesinger?s legal struggle against Disney began, as the family sued Disney in state court, alleging breach of contract. The family ultimately lost that case, and in 2009, a federal judge ruled that the Slesingers? Pooh rights had been completely transferred to Disney. Because of that 2009 ruling, the federal appeals court was able to give its ruling last Friday, which deemed it correct for the trademark office to reject the family?s challenge to Disney?s ownership, thus hopefully putting this long legal struggle to rest.

MF Global trustee announces settlement deals key to cash payouts

(Reuters) - The trustee for the failed MF Global Inc on Saturday announced two key agreements that are expected to accelerate cash payouts to clients and creditors of the failed futures brokerage.

James Giddens, trustee for the MF Global estate, said in a statement he has negotiated deals to resolve disputes with the company's former British affiliate and the parent company, MF Global Holdings Ltd.

As a result of the UK agreement, Giddens estimated between$500 million and $600 million could be returned to the MF Global estate if the deal is finalized.

Giddens, whose job is to recover as much money as possible for customers, has returned about 80 percent of the money in customer trading accounts.

Giddens said claims by MF Global's securities customers could be fully restored. Commodities customers could get "significant additional distributions," he said.

The estate has a hearing scheduled for January 31, 2013 before the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, the first step toward getting the UK agreement approved.

"The trustee's goal is still to return 100 percent to the commodities customers, and we will be going before the court in an attempt to achieve that," Kent Jarrell, a spokesman for Giddens, said on Saturday.

MF Global improperly used customer money to plug liquidity gaps as the brokerage was in freefall last year, creating a roughly $1.6 billion gap in customer accounts, according to a June report by Giddens. The company filed for bankruptcy in October 2011.

As a result of money changing hands during MF Global's chaotic collapse, various company affiliates have been fighting over who owes money to whom.

Earlier this month, Giddens released a report saying more than 28,000 claims have been filed by the brokerage's commodities and securities customers, all but 200 have been fully resolved.

So far, Giddens has returned approximately $4.7 billion to commodities customers hit by the brokerage's collapse.

E-commerce: Is It Time To Take Your Business Online? | RI Small ...

According to the U.S. Online Retail Forecast, 2011-2016, done by Forrester Research, Inc., 15% more consumers will be shopping online and spending up to 44% more when they do. Forrester also projects that online spending in the U.S. will increase by 62% by 2016. With improved retailer websites and the widespread adoption of smartphone usage, cybershopping is becoming easier every day. Taking your business online is no longer a question of if, but when.

But how does a business owner even start to think about hopping aboard the e-commerce train? Selling online can take several forms, so how do you know which option is right for you?? And what about folks who run service based businesses? How can they get on board with E-commerce?

Explore your three basic E-commerce options

When it comes to E-commerce, you have three basic options. The first option is to sell products through a third-party site like Amazon or eBay. The advantage here is that you don?t have to maintain your own site, and there?s already a built-in audience who finds your products through searching the sites.? Look at it as a way to dip your toe in the water before committing to something more involved.

Your next option is to add online ordering or a shopping cart to your existing website. This is a popular option among many small businesses and it makes a lot of sense for people with product lines consisting of a few basic products. The advantage here is that the technology is fairly simple and you can maintain the whole thing yourself. You can use a third party E-commerce site like Volution or Shopsite to get started.? These are great, but they do have their limitations. If you find that you need something more robust, then you can take your third option and go for a fully integrated E-commerce site.

A fully integrated E-commerce store is perfect if you have a large number of products and you need things like advanced reporting, a point of sales integration, system, real time inventory, order tracking, wish list or send to a friend capabilities, or you?d like to be able to suggest related products.

The benefits of E-commerce

Obviously having E-commerce capabilities is going to help attract new customers. That?s the hope, anyway! If you think about it, building an E-commerce site is like opening up a whole new location?a cyberlocation that allows a new group of folks access to you. And of course, that also means that your site must be mobile friendly. If you?re gonna go, go big and make it easy for everybody to get to you!

But that?s not the only benefit to going cyber. You also have a great way to collect customer contact information when people place an order with you. It?s also a way for customers to take a look at your products and get to know you a little better?in their own time and in their own space.

What if you don?t want to actually sell anything?

If you?re not really ready to go for it with an E-commerce site, but you think it?s important for customers to be able to take a look at your products before visiting your store, you can always have an online catalog.? It looks like an E-commerce site, but doesn?t have a shopping cart. Popular clothing retailer H&M does this. Their site details all their products along with price tags, but does not sell anything online.? A simpler option is to make a PDF made of your catalog and post it to your website.

How service based businesses can use E-commerce

If your business is based on a service like a personal trainer or a dog groomer, you?re not left out here!? E-commerce is all about making life easier for customers, so why not make it possible for them to schedule appointments, check your availability, pay for services in advance, or purchase a gift card?? Imagine how cool it would be if a customer booked your time and paid for it ahead of time? That would naturally lead to fewer cancellations!? And, the convenience factor speaks for itself.

No matter what kind of business you have or which E-commerce option is best for you, setting things up can be complicated and there are many pieces to put together. You need to set up domain names and email, establish a payment method and shipping policies. It?s a lot to pull together, so if you find yourself getting overwhelmed, make sure you ask for help. There are plenty of qualified folks out there who can help you make solid decisions and get you up and running smoothly.

Annie Leibovitz lists West Village compound

5 hrs.

This week in celebrity real estate, celebrated celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz has listed her West Village compound and singer Nancy Sinatra sold her Santa Monica home.

Annie Leibovitz? picture-perfect compound for sale
The maker of so many of pop culture?s most iconic images from the past 40 years spent almost as much time creating a stellar artist?s compound in the West Village. Now, it seems it?s time to move on ??or at least uptown ??so famed photographer Annie Leibovitz has listed her 10,000-square-foot home at 755 Greenwich St, New York, NY 10014.

The price is a whopping $33 million, however, the townhouse in the heart of the Village is actually three separate addresses that have been combined into a spacious living and work space.?The listing is held by Brown Harris Stevens agents Paula Del Nunzio and Guida De Carvalhosa, who fittingly describe the series of spaces, including a main residence with 4 bedrooms, a separate guest area, a studio and garden patio. The townhouse has 13 fireplaces, wide plank floors and central air.

Leibovitz has decided to list the property several years after she faced bankruptcy, which sent her scrambling to settle with creditors, including Goldman Sachs, and preserve the rights to her photographs, as well as saving her townhouse and stone farmhouse complex in Rhinebeck, NY.

According to the the agents listing her home, Leibovitz is now selling the West Village property to move uptown closer to the school that her three daughters attend.

A year after buying, Nancy Sinatra sells home
The listing notes say it all about this wonderful Santa Monica ranch: ?It?s your ?Something?s Gotta Give? house.?

Well, for owner Nancy Sinatra, who just bought this 4,000-square-foot home on a cul-de-sac one year ago, something must have given. The daughter of Frank Sinatra decided to move on ??and fast. She not only listed this cozy home with double master suites but sold it in a very quick, 10-day settlement deal.

Sinatra?s boots must be made for walking away. The hit-making singer, who is now 72, listed the home for $4.985 million. She bought the place for $5,060,550 million in November 2011.

Listing agent Rory Barish?of Lane Four Real Estate, a division of Keller Williams Beverly Hills, would not comment on the reasons for Sinatra?s change of heart. However, there?s no shortage of reasons why this home made for a great Los Angeles acquisition, even if it went in a New York minute.

?It?s just seven blocks to the ocean on a wonderful street, and the greatest thing is that you?re in the flats but you do not sacrifice the view. You can see the ocean from this house, but you are just blocks to (the Promenade and other Santa Monica landmarks)? Barish said.

Helpful Tips On Investing In Commercial Real Estate - Maynas Eric

Commercial property is a very exciting endeavor, however, it takes a ton of work. This can leave you wondering where you should even begin. It can seem overwhelming and difficult to know what to think about when it comes to commercial real estate, yet in this article, you can learn some insightful information on what you should be doing and learning.

Do a walk-through of each property on your short list. You can even take a contractor with you to provide expert advice. Submit a first offer and solicit counteroffers. Don?t decide on anything without careful consideration.

You might have to make improvements to your space before you can use it. It may simply be cosmetic issues that need addressing, such as a fresh coat of paint or some furniture rearrangement. Oftentimes, moving walls and other fixtures is required to redistribute the floorplan. Remind the landlord that these improvements are necessary, and use them to negotiate a lower deposit or reduced rent.

TIP! Think bigger when you are investing in commercial properties. If you were considering purchasing a five-unit building, recognize that managing fifty units is no more difficult than five.

Feng shui might improve your commercial investing profits when used correctly in the interior design of your properties. If you provide a lot of open space in your units and avoid clutter as much as possible, buyers are more likely to be interested in your property.

You must absolutely confirm that your real estate?s asking price is realistic. Different variables can have an impact of the value of a lot.

Research any real estate brokers you are considering working with, and ask questions to determine whether their visions align with yours. Ask about their methods for gathering and interpreting results. Make sure you understand their methods and strategies. Choose a broker who matches you in all of the answers they give, be it the same strategies or complementary ones.

TIP! When looking for commercial real estate properties to house your business, keep in mind that size is among the biggest factors. If you do not want to be looking at properties again soon, it is important to find a commercial space with sufficient room for future expansion.

Dual Agency

Read the fine print about your real estate agent. It is important that you realize that you may be entering a dual agency transaction. Dual agency in real estate is when the agency works for both parties. The real estate agency will represent both the seller and the buyer. If dual agency is the case, it should be out in the open and both the landlord and the tenant should be in agreement with the arrangement.

You may find that you spend a large amount of time at first on your investment. It can take a little time to find a property worth purchasing, and you also may have to make necessary repairs. Don?t let the amount time you need to put in during this phase discourage you. You will reap the rewards of all your hard work.

TIP! It is easy to get emotional when you are venturing into the commercial real estate market, but is is very important to stay patient and remain calm. Don?t rush to make an investment.

There are many ways available to cut down on repair costs when cleaning up the property. You are potentially responsible in paying for cleanup if you have an ownership interest pertaining to the property. It can cost your a lot of money to clean up and get rid of garbage. Attempt to get a written report from an environmental assessment company. Such reports can be expensive, but they are worth it in the long run.`

Pro Forma

This is important because you want to ensure that the terms line up with the pro forma and the rent roll. If you do not look over these key terms, you could find a term that was not considered in the rent roll, which could cause a change in the pro forma.

TIP! Watch for motivated sellers. You have to look for them, particularly the sellers who are willing to sell for less than the market price.

Before you enter the commercial real estate market, be sure you have established your presence online. Make a website for yourself and make a LinkedIn profile. Try using SEO to help yourself place higher in the search results. The intent here is for anyone you deal with being able to find you easily, just by typing your name into their favorite search engine.

Commercial Property

As you have just read, you are now aware that the purchasing and owning process of commercial property requires a lot of hard work and effort on your part to make it a smooth experience. You must also be persistent. Take the advice from this article to heart, and follow it and your dream of owning commercial property.

TIP! Look into the neighborhood you?re planning on buying property in. For example, if you?re offering high-priced goods or services, you might want to purchase property in wealthier areas where people are likely to be able to afford to buy from you.

In today?s lesson, I want to share with you some of the things that you could be doing to have the success in your online business that you are looking. These tips are easy to use, and are kind of fun to do - because they help to bring in the sales immediately. Here?s tip number 1:

1) Give away a freebie

With a freebie, you will attract alot of people to your offer. If you have a squeeze page that promotes your free item, expect alot of people to sign up to your list just to get the free offer. Some will stay on your list and some will not. For those who do stay on your list, keep marketing to them and see if you can generate a sale from them via your email newsletter.

You will want to email them every 4 days once they?re in your selling cycle. Don?t email everyday because this is the fastest way to get someone to unsubscribe from you. You don?t want to be perceived as a pest. But this is just one way to bring in sales immediately. Here?s another one:

2) Lead people to your sales letter page

Depending on your price and offer, it may be a good idea just to lead people to your sales letter page. If you sell a product under $40, just lead people to your sales letter page. You?ll get sales immediately this wait, and you won?t have to nurture your list on the frontend side of things, because you?re reserving that nurturing until when they become a customer.

80% of your total business profits will come from sales on the backend. So this is something that you should seriously consider doing in your internet business today. But nevertheless, you should consider leading people to your sales letter page so that you can get sales right away.

It?s not too late to start using these strategies. If they feel ?foreign? to you, give them a shot and see how well they work for you. You never know what the results will be.

Take these 2 tips and use them to boost your sales and profits today. I personally use them in my business, and they work phenomenally. I think you can do the same in your business also.

Good luck with marketing your online business today.
